I find many people use the word respect when they are actually referring to obedience. These words have very different meanings yet you see it often in reference to children ‘needing to respect’ their parents as well as in reference to citizens ‘needing to respect’ law enforcement or military officials. It is a dangerous trend. Respect is earned – as it should be – by the actions, kindness or talents of individuals. In contrast, obedience is demanded or expected through the threat of force or punishment from authority. Kelly Halldorson.
